KUMAMOTO ARTPOLIS: ARCHITECTURE THROUGH COMMUNICATION
KUMAMOTO ARTPOLIS: ARCHITECTURE THROUGH COMMUNICATION
August 28—September 18, 2016
An exhibition of photographs of the Kumamoto Artpolis program begun in Japan in
1988 as an innovative attempt to develop new communities throughout Kumamoto
Prefecture (a two hour flight from Tokyo). Still in place, the program has created an
architectural culture in Kumamoto Prefecture. Architects, designers, and local
residents work together to create buildings, bridges, and parks that are in harmony
with their respective natural and historical contexts. The structures are designed to
propose new lifestyles and new images of society as well as create valuable assets for
future generations. The program has played an important role in proving local culture
and increasing regional vitality.
Opening Reception (free and open to the public) Friday, August 26, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
